Pistol and Rifle Fundamentals,
Trained to a Standard.
EVA Foundations is EVA's foundational pistol class, rifle class, or combined shooting class: one day, a fixed curriculum, delivered privately at Butterfield Shooting Range in Las Cruces, New Mexico. You choose the platform. The standard does not change.
Pistol. Rifle.
Or Both.
The platform is the only thing a Foundations client selects. Everything else about the day is set, because the fundamentals do not change from one client to the next. Grip, stance, trigger discipline, sight picture, presentation, reloads, malfunction management, and the mindset that holds when conditions compress. It is the mechanical standard every EVA program above it is built on.
One day on the pistol you carry or keep at home. Presentation from the holster, then the Marksmanship Ladder from seven to twenty-five yards: precision, then presentation, then tempo, then transitions. A repeatable standard you can hold under a clock.
One day on the rifle. The same fundamentals, grip, stance, trigger discipline, sight picture, presentation, reloads, and malfunction management, built on the same ladder logic: precision first, then presentation, then tempo, then transitions.
Both platforms in one day, each trained in sequence to the same standard. For the client who keeps a pistol and a rifle and wants one standard across both.
The Marksmanship
Ladder
Four rungs, climbed in order. Precision without the draw, precision from the draw, precision under tempo, precision across targets. You never advance a rung by sacrificing the one below it. Protocol 01 is written for the pistol; the rifle day is built on the same logic on its own platform.
Accuracy and mechanical consistency with the draw removed as a variable. One shot at a time, every fundamental confirmed before the shot breaks, form read after each one. If it is not perfect, it is not sent.
The presentation is added without surrendering a single fundamental. Draw as fast as you can execute safely, then aim and confirm, one shot at a time. Smooth is the draw. Perfect is the shot.
Tempo enters. Six shots from the holster as fast as you can control, then read the group: grip, trigger, visual patience. Speed you cannot account for is not speed. It is noise.
Two or three rounds on each target, eyes leading every transition, recoil working for you. The decision loop under load: the eyes lead, the gun follows, the mind stays ahead of both.
The debrief: the target is a mirror. Where did the group open? That distance is the edge of current capability. What broke first when tempo climbed, grip, sight, or trigger? That is the fundamental to isolate. Did the eyes lead on transitions? Train the sequence, not the speed.
Grip pressure, trigger index, and recoil recovery are built one deliberate repetition at a time, until the body executes without instruction. When weapon alignment becomes automatic, mental load declines, and that reclaimed bandwidth is where performance under pressure actually lives. The trigger press is not the product. The person who can stay clear while executing it is.
- One day on a fixed curriculum, built and refined by EVA, delivered the same way every time
- A pistol class, a rifle class, or both platforms in one day
- Delivered one-on-one, or to a closed group you bring, and quoted as one engagement
- Taught by Jonathan Harrison at Butterfield Shooting Range in Las Cruces, New Mexico
- The entry point into every EVA program above it
- Not an open-enrollment class. No seats are sold and no strangers are mixed
- No add-ons, no tactics modules, no custom requests inside the day
- Not tactical shooting, vehicle work, low-light, or team coordination. That is Private Coaching, built around you
- Not a measurement of leadership under pressure. That is the Strategic Performance Audit
What to Bring
Participants supply their own weapons and ammunition in every EVA program. For Foundations that means the pistol or rifle you will train with, magazines, a holster for the pistol day, eye and ear protection, and ammunition. Round counts and any site-specific requirements are confirmed when your engagement is scoped, before a date is set.

Before you apply.
Is EVA Foundations a beginner pistol class?
It is the entry point for serious individuals at any level. Foundations is built on fundamentals, so a new shooter and an experienced shooter who has never had formal instruction begin in the same place and are held to the same standard. Nothing is skipped and nothing is added.
Can I take the rifle class without the pistol class?
Yes. You select pistol, rifle, or both. Each platform is a complete one-day engagement on its own, and the combined day covers both to the same standard.
How many people can attend?
Foundations is delivered one-on-one, or to a closed group you bring, such as a family, a team, or an organization. There is no open enrollment and no mixing with strangers. Group size is confirmed when the engagement is scoped.
Where is the class held?
At Butterfield Shooting Range, 13500 Frontage Road, Las Cruces, NM 88007, on the West Mesa west of the city, under an hour from El Paso. A closed group can also be trained at a client-provided site; EVA confirms what the site has available before scoping and quoting.
Do I need my own firearm and ammunition?
Yes. In every EVA program, participants supply their own weapons and ammunition. For Foundations that means the pistol or rifle you will train with, magazines, a holster for the pistol day, eye and ear protection, and ammunition. Round counts are confirmed when the engagement is scoped.
What does it cost?
Foundations is quoted as one engagement, by inquiry, rather than sold as an open seat. Tell EVA the platform and who is attending, and you will have a quote within two business days. Anything beyond the fundamentals is Private Coaching, from $1,200.
How do I apply?
There is no online booking. Submit an application or an inquiry, and Jonathan Harrison responds personally within two business days.
